Course Description
ArtsAlive! Fourth Grade is geared to ages 8–9 and aligns with National Core Arts Standards and select Common Core English Language Arts Standards for fourth grade. Designed around the theme of The Arts Are Everywhere, students continue to build their skills and understanding about the arts, learn to recognize how the arts show up in their everyday lives, and learn to play a musical instrument called a recorder. The engaging lessons contain images and videos, along with text and captions written at a fourth-grade level.
Visual Arts
Builds upon a student’s knowledge of the elements of art and moves into an exploration of the principles of design, including balance, rhythm, scale, repetition, and movement. The Activity Book is filled with challenging activities like drawing implied texture, making designs with anomalies, and creating complex patterns. And video-led projects include printmaking, paper weaving, and building a mini dimensional art installation.
Performing Arts
Looks at the history of storytelling to an audience, with lessons on ancient Greek theater, early animation and film productions, and modern episodes and commercials. Students continue to participate in activities to see how actors portray different characters, and they learn about the creative process of storyboarding through hands-on activities.
Music
Begins by covering elements of musical notation, including the solfège scale and the musical alphabet, and then introduces students to a recorder instrument. They’ll learn how to handle and care for their recorder and watch instructional videos that support them in reading sheet music and playing six different pieces. The last lesson even has them composing their own short pieces of music.
Creative Writing
Builds upon what students learned in Fourth Grade and continues to encourage curiosity about written and spoken language. Students learn about the power of themes in storytelling, build their vocabulary by learning about root words, and work their way through the interactive Kate & Oliver writing journal to build their vocabulary and investigate just how important the arts are to subjects like math, science, and history.
