Course Description
ArtsAlive! Fifth Grade is geared to ages 9–10 and aligns with National Core Art Standards and select Common Core English Language Arts Standards for fifth grade. Designed around the theme The World is Full of Art, students strengthen their skills in the arts, continue to play the recorder, and broaden their horizons by learning about how the arts have shaped the cultures and traditions of the world. The engaging lessons contain images and videos, along with text and captions written at a fourth-grade level.
Visual Arts
Reviews the elements of art and the principles of design and then launches into a journey though art history. Students will learn about ancient art, the advancements in art during the Renaissance, and the milestones the moved art into modern times. They’ll gain new skills using the engaging Activity Book and create projects to explore the art and architecture of the world through helpful video demonstrations.
Performing Arts
Takes students on world tour to learn how humans have always shared stories through acting, singing, dancing. They’ll explore how dancers from India use hand gestures, how the Chinese use shadows to tell stories, and how Shakespeare’s words still inspire us today. There are lesson about marionettes, African dancing, and 20-foot dragons plus plenty of activities to teach students how the performing arts have shaped the cultures of the world.
Music
Begins by exploring how music connects people and cultures around the world. Students travel from continent to continent to discover different musical styles and journey through history from Mozart to modern-day music. They’ll learn how to handle and care for a recorder and use instructional videos to help them play a variety of pieces from around the world. Along the way, they’ll learn about musical dynamics and notation and compose their own recorder piece.
Creative Writing
Reinforces what students have learned about art and culture, with lessons on the history of written alphabets, the printing press and its impact on communication, and how we still use Shakespeare’s words every day. Students expand their vocabulary by exploring root words and seeing how world languages influence one another, and they explore the power of visual languages by learning about logos and ideographs. Students build valuable creative communications skills and complete writing activities in their own interactive journal.
